Seated Liberty Dime

How Did a Dime Piece First Became a Part of our Lives?
I am sure that many of you have never looked at a dime piece and thought about how this coin first became a part of our lives. The dime piece was introduced to the public in 1796. This coin has been so much part of our lives and history that you will find that there are certain adjustments that have been made to the dime piece so that it will be able to function in our busy lives.
When you look at the dime piece you will see on one side a portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The other side of the coin has a torch, and an oak branch and olive branch flanking the torch. The design for the dime piece was done by John R. Sinnock and the designs were placed on the dime piece in 1946. This smallest and thickest of the US coins was given the congressional stamp of approval in 1792.
Even though we know how the dime piece looks today there have been six major design changes to the dime piece. For each of these design changes the dime has been identified with another name. These different dime piece designs start with the Draped Bust which was used from 1796 to 1807.
The next one is the Capped Bust which was in the public usage during 1809 to 1837. You will find that the next change for the dime piece is the Seated Liberty for the length of time from 1837 to 1982. You then have the Barber Dime piece design. This was seen by the public in 1892 until 1916. The next to last change was the Winged Liberty Head or as it was incorrectly called the Mercury in 1916 to 1945. We are now at the present day usage of the dime piece. From 1945 and up to the present the design on the dime piece is that of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
For the next change to occur it will be necessary for congress to pass approval. Until that time comes we can expect to see the dime piece in this condition. So the next time that you have a dime piece in your possession you may want to keep it until you can find the value. After all with so many dimes in circulation you may find a few that feature some of the earlier dime piece face designs.
While you may not consider the dime piece as a coin collectors item the fact that there have been major changes to the coin indicates that the dime was a part of our ever changing history and therefore valuable in that way.

United States Seated Liberty Coinage $44.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Seated Liberty designs appeared on most regular-issue silver United States coinage during the mid- and late-nineteenth century, from 1836 through 1891. The denominations which featured the Seated Liberty design included the half dime, the dime, the quarter, the half dollar, and until 1873 the silver dollar. Another coin that appeared exclusively in the Seated Liberty design was the twenty cent piece. This coin was produced from 1875 to 1878, and was discontinued because it looked very similar to the quarter. Seated Liberty coinage was minted at the main United States Mint in Philadelphia, as well as the branch mints in New Orleans, San Francisco, and Carson City. |

Dime (United States Coin) $63.73 The dime is a coin worth ten cents or one tenth of a United States dollar. The dime is the smallest in diameter and the thinnest of all U.S. coins currently minted for circulation. The 32nd President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, is featured on the obverse of the current design, while a torch, oak branch, and olive branch covering the motto E pluribus unum are featured on the reverse. The dimes value is labeled as one dime, since the term dime also applies to a unit of currency worth 10 cents or 1/10 of a dollar. The dime was commissioned by the Coinage Act of 1792, and production began in 1796. A feminine head representing Liberty was used on the front of the coin, and an eagle was used on the back. The front and back of the dime used these motifs for three different designs through 1837. The composition and diameter of the dime have changed throughout its mintage. Initially the dime was 0.75 inch (19 millimeters) wide, but it was changed to its present size of 0.705 inch (17.91 millimeters) in 1828. The composition (initially 89.24 percent silver and 10.76 percent copper) remained constant until 1837, when it was altered to 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper.
