Confederate Half Dollars – Million Dollar Silver Coins
In 1879, the only known copy of the official coinage metal was discovered in the Confederate States of America. This Silver Coin was widely known to exist of four Confederate half dollar. Very few American coins, now we can say so much interest from collectors, as this rare half dollar Funke United States Seated Liberty, with its front and back of the Confederate States of unique design.
The story of the finding in 1879 began writing a newspaper article E.Mason, of Philadelphia, on collecting coins. A few days later he received the news of BF Taylor, MD, then secretary and treasurer of the Louisiana State Board of Health that he is a 1861 Confederate half dollar and had to die the original. Taylor was the chief coiner of the Confederate States Mint in New Orleans, LA in 1861.
Taylor reported that the reverse was engraved by AH Peterson, and that four test coins on a hand press were made in April 1861. Original United State SilverPlanchets used by the Louisiana Militia at 31 Confiscated in January, 1861 were used. One of these coins was given to Jefferson Davis, president of the Federation. A second medal was Professor John L. Riddell of the University of Louisiana (Tulane) submitted. The third coin was given to Dr. E. Ames of New Orleans and fourth was held by Taylor.
E. Mason sold the test coin and the Confederate reverse die JW Scott Stamp and Coin Co. in New York. Scott then receives 500 1861 United Stateshalf-dollar with the New Orleans mint letter on its reverse.
